Will Canadians ever get a crack at new 5er Touring?
By John LeBlanc BMW has started selling its sixth-gen 5er sedan to its European customers. And just as spring follows winter, the station wagon variant, above, is now being unveiled too. But will Canadian wagon lovers ever get a chance to buy the latest 5er Touring? As of now, nobody at the German automaker is saying if the new 5er wagon is or isn’t coming our way. Of course, there has been a five-door Five on sale in Canada for a few months: the $79,600 2011 550i Gran Turismo. But the half-pregnant (hatchback/crossover) 5 GT neither looks as good or (we can assume) drives as well as the lower, lighter and less-expensive ($71,000) 2010 535i xDrive Touring. If BMW decides not to bring the new 5er Touring to Canada, who can we wagon lovers blame? BMW X5 and X3 who have basically killed off demand? The wagon-hating, status conscious Americans? Whomever we point our collective finger at, my advice is get on down to your local Bimmer dealer and get a 2010 535i Touring: it very well may be the last of the 5er wagons to be sold in Canada. I would like to see a 335iX Touring as a step up from the already overpriced and underpowered 328 now available.

I love this wagon, but its overpriced. Nobody in their right mind is going to pay $71k for it, when they can get into an X5 for $15K less.
Maybe if they didn’t have the X5 they’d sell more wagons, making lower prices possible.
