Stuff: R8 V10 grabs World Performance Car honours
By John LeBlanc NEW YORK - Kicking off the second media day of this year's New York show, the Audi R8 V10 was declared the 2010 World Performance Car from a short list that included the Ferrari California and the Porsche 911 GT3. Along with yours truly representing Canada, pictured above fourth from the right, 59 auto scribes from around the world picked the Audi from an initial entry list of sixteen nominees. FYI: Candidates for the World Performance Car award must "demonstrate a specific and overt Sports/Performance orientation," which the Audi does with gusto. Simply put: the R8 V10 is what happens when an automaker is on a roll. This is the fifth year of the World Performance Car award and the R8 has won it twice. Previously, World Performance Car winners have been the 2009 Nissan GT-R , the cooking Audi R8 V8 in 2008, the 2007 Audi RS4 and the Porsche Cayman S in 2006. Essentially a less expensive Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4, the über Audi is also a bit a steal. For $173,000, the R8 V10 offers a 525 hp 5.2-litre mill that shoots the mid-engine, all-wheel-drive two-seater from 0-96 km/h in 3.4 seconds It was a good year for the Volkswagen Group at this year's World Car of the Year awards as well, taking two out of the three top category trophies. The not-ready for North America Volkswagen Polo subcompact won the overall 2010 World Car of the Year, while VW's Euro Bluemotion eco models won World Green Car.
