We haven’t been avoiding talking about the way our long-term 2015 Honda CR-V SE AWD drives. Really! First, we took a deep dive into all the details that went into Honda’s refresh of its best-selling compact crossover, and then we looked at the five-passenger, all-wheel-drive vehicle’s noteworthy people and cargo hauling capabilities. We’re now three-quarters through our 60-day test drive, so it seemed an appropriate time to discuss how the Honda feels from the driver’s seat (we also wanted to wait until the winter tires finally came off).

At this year’s New York Auto Show, Ford rolled out a concept for its new Continental, a flagship luxury sedan set to go on sale next year. And without hesitation, Ford officials made it clear that, yes, they would be quite happy if they sold a few Continentals in North America. But really, the big, roomy and comfortable luxury sedan was designed primarily for the Chinese buyer in mind.

It’s been more than a decade now since luxury compact crossovers have become immensely popular and have become almost as commonplace as their sedan counterparts. SUVs like the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class sell almost as much as their respective A4, 3 Series and C-Class siblings, greatly helping their parent companies attract new customers.

There are plenty of good reasons why compact crossovers have become so popular with Canadians. Most can be equipped with all-wheel-drive for added on-road security; many offer fuel economy that’s darn-near equal to a compact car; and the majority are priced right in line with the average new car buyer’s budget. But perhaps the overriding reason why people are buying small SUVs — like our 2015 Honda CR-V SE AWD 60-day test drive subject — in record numbers is for their highly functional and versatile interiors.
