2010 Detroit: Not-so-mini Mini materializes

By John LeBlanc DETROIT - According to Ian Robertson, BMW Sales and Marketing board member, the Mini Beachcomber concept is "a Mini that’s tough, fearless and ready for any open air adventure. Maybe. With all-wheel-drive and open-air possibilities inspired by the Mini Moke from the 1960s, the latest literal stretch (it's more than four metres long) of the Mini certainly looks capable of some light off-roading. Like, say, combing, er, a beach. What it more than likely won't be is for sale to the public. Sorry. But the Beachcomber is a show car distraction until the fully-enclosed Mini Crossover arrives in Canadian showrooms in early 2011. The concept's four-place seating, five-doors and all-wheel-drive system will make it to production. But expect more realistic Crossover production details around the time of the Geneva auto show, early in March. [Source: BMW]
